Three Businesses String Together For Local Mom's Dream Come True (01/17/11)

Painting from the Heart winners and contributers

When Dawn Lopez wrote in to the Osprey Observer asking for a new paint job for the outside of her Boyette Springs home, the single mom never imagined it would turn into a total home makeover. In her letter, Lopez told of cold nights and hot days with no air conditioning or heat, of a living room floor with no carpeting, but painted concrete.

"If I am not chosen, I will understand. There are always folks out there less fortunate than I," her letter stated. "I am lucky in so many other ways and that I have a steady job, we are healthy, and have a roof over our heads. A/C, carpeting and new paint are perks, not necessities. I am sure whomever you choose, will be grateful no matter what."

Although Rob Silver, owner of Dynamic Painting, had already chosen his winner for the Painting from the Heart campaign, his heart still felt he needed to help this family, including Lopez's two teenage children.

"I knew I would be painting more than one house when I started the Painting from the Heart program," Silver recollected. "When I read Dawn's story, I felt driven to help her and her family." With the help of Osprey Observer Editor Marie Gilmore, Silver has teamed up with other local business owners Mary Ann Wilhelm, of Wilhelm Heating and Air Conditioning, and Mike Solmonson, of Flooring America, to repair this residence.

On an early morning in December, the Lopez house was buzzing with staff members from all of the companies heading in and out of the home, laying carpet, taking an old air handler out of the attic and putting a new one in.

Wilhelm heard about the house makeover for Dawn Lopez from Erin Messano at the Osprey Observer. "Having participated in community support projects before, I felt compelled to try to help Dawn," Wilhelm explained. "I contacted Carrier and asked if they could help also. We worked a deal and presented it to Dawn - she was thrilled and is now the proud owner of a 15 SEER Carrier heat pump system. Glad we could help and make a difference."

The Osprey Observer actually started the chain of information that went out to Tanya Doran at the Riverview Chamber of Commerce. Tanya forwarded that information to Mike Solmonson and Nicole Skelly, administrative assistant to the owner of Flooring America, Rufus Ashby.

"The timing was perfect, the staff and management of Flooring America had just completed our holiday fund drive and we were in the process of determining how/who to donate," Solmonson said. "With the help of Ashby, we were able to supply the carpet, cushion and labor to install."

"Dawn's gratitude has been very positive to all of the staff and management," he conveyed. Flooring America owner Ashby said, "I know Rob Silver through various networking groups in our community, but Mrs. Lopez's situation was brought to my attention by a couple of my employees. I was so touched by her situation and the fact that my employees wanted to pool their own money together to cover the cost of installation of her carpet, I had no second thoughts about offering to donate the carpet itself." "Times are tough, but with everyone coming together it is easy to make a difference in our community," Ashby concluded.
