Ruskin Chamber Hands out Awards at 82nd Annual Awards Dinner
RUSKIN - The Ruskin Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 82nd annual awards dinner on Jan. 22 and recognized eight members for their contributions during 2009.
Business Person of the Year Award went to Penny Smith of H&R Block; Small Business of the Year, South Shore Gallery; Large Business, Sweetbay Supermarket in Apollo Beach; Ambassador, Ron Simpson of Weichert Realtors – SouthShore; Rising Star, Logan Sultenfuss of Apollo's Bistro; and Volunteer, Ruth Benoit of PD Graphix. Ruskin VFW Post 6287 won the E.G. Simmons Award for community service.
County Commissioner Al Higginbotham came as a distinguished guest and presented the chamber with a commendation for its community outreach and support. The commendation was signed by each member of the county commission.
Unexpectedly, a special award — the Director's Award — was given to Melanie Morrison, the chamber's executive director, by John Smith, incoming president. Smith called Morrison is "a powerhouse, a master facilitator, who knows how to get the right people together to get any job done.
"She deserves this recognition for her continued leadership, creativity and enthusiastic support of members and their needs," he said. "Melanie spearheads everything from the Ruskin Seafood Festival and Ruskin Runaround to Partners in Success and the new Edison Club. She's also heavily involved in supporting the teachers and students of area schools, migrant families and numerous relief efforts.
"She's a shining light, and the chamber, its members and the community at large are very fortunate to have her."
Other highlights of the evening included Morrison's special award to Mary Ann Wilhelm of Wilhelm Heating & Air Conditioning as the chamber's most supportive member during 2009. As outgoing honorary mayor, Smith presented the key to Ruskin to Stacy Self of Sam Cook's Home Service Centre.
Morrison also recognized the committee members who worked so hard on the Academy Awards-themed décor. They were: Patti Thornton, SunTrust Bank; Penny Smith, H&R Block; Lynn Kessel, Tribune food columnist, blogger; and Benoit.
Students from the South County Career Center's culinary department catered the event, which was sponsored by the South Shore News & Tribune, Tampa Electric Company, Mosaic Fertilizer LLC; South Bay Hospital; and Anne Madden.
